What Have You Done So Far To Earn Extra Income?

Trying to earn extra income is always a welcome strategy, whether you are paying off debt or just trying to save more money.

Even if you are still a student (so at least in theory you don’t have an income) or already have a ‘regular’ job, each extra buck you earn can help you accomplish more of your financial goals.

Today I’d like us to remember what we’ve done so far when it comes to earning some extra money.

Tutoring

I was about 15, when a neighbor of mine asked me id I’d be willing to tutor his kid. The girl was 4 years younger than me and needed some more help with her English. While she was actually pretty good at it, doing homework and studying for the classes weren’t always her priorities, so she needed someone to spruce things up and also encourage her to prepare for school.

She was a really smart and nice kid, so our ‘classes’ together were fun and I got paid on top of it. Before you could say ‘English’, I started getting more requests, since other neighbors found out I’m open for business and word spread out fast that I’m doing a great job with the kids.

I never pursued this seriously though, had to prepare for the final exam at high-school and then to enter college, so I had 2-3 kids only and earned enough to afford some very expensive English books and maybe some sport pants. Yet, having to earn extra income even at such a young age opened my taste for doing ‘business’ and now, 20 or so years after, I earn a living running my small web design business.

Handmade jewelry

OK, jewelry might get you to think about diamond rings. I was creating handmade bracelets, earrings etc. from silver and all kinds of beads (semi-precious stones, mother of pearl etc.)

I planned on creating a web site to sell them, but got distracted lately with the child and everything. I did sell locally and a lot of ladies were thrilled, so I’m considering opening ‘shop’ again.

Web Design

This started as a side hustle in 2004 and turned into my full time business in 2009. I am VERY grateful that I had this plan B, since thinks looked very dire when I lost my job and also had quite some debt. Fortunately things worked out and right now my side gig is paying our bills and puts money on the table.

Were you able to earn extra income in the past? What did you do and how did it work out? Any plans for the future?

  1. Nice list! I’ve done a ton of things for money — pet sitting, brand ambassador work, event assistant, envelope stuffing, catering, writing, editing, and virtual assisting. There are a ton of things you can do if you just get creative.
