“Life is what happens to us while we are making other plans” and not always these plans work out for the best. I think any of us have personal stories about having to overcome various tragedies in our lives, or we know people who haven’t been dealt the best ‘cards’ in their lives. This is why life insurance becomes a very good idea and many of us may wish they took advantage of it in the past.
In our family money was always tight. We all earned little and, just when we’d seem to do better, something would happen. My folks used to say they don’t like to plan, since their plans never came true. Same with the money: it’s always a great idea to save, but for them this was yet another way to tempt faith to throw something at them, so that they emergency funds would get spent in a heartbeat.
One of the turning points in my life was when we lost my grandfather. In my case he was more like a father to me, so this wasn’t an easy loss. On top of everything, he was the main provider in our family, so, the moment he ‘went’, we were left with a huge chunk of our monthly income. Plus a costly funeral (they’re always costly, even if you try to keep the costs down) and a pretty grim future for us all.
Back then, the idea of having any type of life insurance was just crazy, we barely had few companies in my country that would do this and, in our case, little money to consider this. And yet how great it would have been to get some money to help us back on track.
Looking back, anything would have helped us tremendously. Looking at this life insurance comparison, I see two options that would have really set us for an easier recovery after losing him: the life insurance and the funeral advantage. In our case the funeral was kept to a minium and still cost us quite a lot.
More than a decade has passed and I’m the main provider in our family. I’m also a mom, so there’s more people I have to think about.
Having started a new family made us both (husband and I) very focused on saving and preparing for the future, whatever this would look like. We don’t need to worry only about ourselves (we’re adults now, so we can clearly keep our heads above the water), but also for our 2 month old daughter, who needs our support for many years to come.
This is why life insurance is a great idea and the money could sometime help our daughter.
Have you considered life insurance plans until now? Has this proven useful for you and your family?
Sorry for your loss.
I’ve had life insurance for ages. Well before many of my contemporaries did. There are times where it might not have made sense, but I have always treated it as just something that gives me peace of mind.
Great post, I definitely agree life insurance is so important. I would rather tempt fate by getting it than leave my family without that support. It gives me and my husband peace to know that there is some sort of support for our kids if anything ever happens to us.
