New York City is well known for various attractions and places, but one of the things we really love and appreciate is the architecture some of its buildings have. While visiting the city and enjoying taking picture, I got to love some of its buildings and thought about creating my own Top7. You’ll surely recognize most of them, since they’re well known throughout the world. Without too much too add, here are the 7 NYC wonders.
Chrysler Building
If you haven’t lived under a rock, then it’s a familiar ‘face’ to you. Present in many movies and documentaries, it’s considered to be one of the most beautiful Art Deco buildings in Manhattan. And it’s a wonderful landmark, that’s for sure.
As you come from Times Square near Bryant Park, Chrysler Building is easy to spot. There’s no need for further directions, you’ll see it easily whether you come from here or Park Avenue. It’s my husband’s favorite and I cannot say anything about it, but that it does look amazing. Here we have a closeup, with part of the great decorations on Grand Central Station and a bit of the well known Hyatt Hotel.
Empire State Building
If you might have not remembered the Chrysler Building, but Empire State Building is so well known that most tourists have it in their top attractions to visit when they get in New York City. Easy to find, as you come on the 5th Avenue, the skyscraper offers an amazing view from its top.
We have another picture taken from the Gantry Plaza..
Rockefeller Center
Another important landmark for any NYC tourist and local, is Rockefeller Center, ‘home’ of the ice-skating ring and the Christmas Tree. A wonderful location and another birds-eye view over Manhattan.
Freedom Tower (One World Center)
While I don’t fancy big ‘glass & iron’ buildings, One World Center has its own charm and history, even if such a sad one. When we visited NYC the building wasn’t yet finished, so you’ll see it still under construction. The view is from Battery Park.
Flatiron
As you go South on 5th Avenue, you’ll get to an intersection with Broadway and 23rd. Flatiron is easy to spot right there. A building like no other, it’s weird shape makes it one of the best known landmarks in Manhattan.
Manhattan Municipal Building
Maybe not as famous as the others, it’s still a great looking building. You’ll surely get to know it, if you take a walk on Brooklyn Bridge.
On its right you can see a new skyscraper, named Beekman. It was almost completely built when we last visited the area.
The building seen from Brooklyn Bridge. It’s a very massive construction, not as slender as it might have looked from my previous picture. Since I was always curious to see ‘who’ the golden lady is on top of it, I used my zoom lens and got a peek.
There you have Civic Fame in all her golden glory.
Woolworth
I left this as the last, even if it’s my favourite. I absolutely love how intricate the decorations are and how majestic this Gothic style building looks. It’s located close to the Municipal Building and Brooklyn Bridge, so it’s really hard to miss.
And if you don’t want to take my word for it, here is a closeup with its top, that clearly shows how complex the decorations are.
Do you have your own favourite buildings in NYC? Are they here in my list?
It’s definitely hard to beat the Chrysler building. Freedom tower is looking pretty sweet as well. Makes me want to get back to NYC!
If I wasn’t pregnant, I’d jump into the plane and get back there, too. Amazing city ๐
It’s one of my dreams – probably just like any other Romanian’s dream – to visit the US and New York would be the first place I’d visit. And I think that any and every building would be, for me, a top building :))
The city is just amazing, you’ll love it. I think in few years, as soon as you kid is a little older to go well on a transatlantic flight, you can make the move. The air fair is not that expensive (OK, for our wages it is), so you could get a decent price. When you’ll make the move, let me know, I can really help with some details and recommendations ๐
Thanks! I actually checked out some flight prices and they’re not as scary as they were when I last checked, which is always a good thing. I have visiting the US on my to do list by 2015, but you are right about the kid getting a bit older since it’s a long flight…
As an example: we bought tickets in Jan-Feb for March till September (we stayed for 6 months there): Budapest – NYC and return (with one stop in Warsaw, Amsterdam or Zurich – we did this 3 years in a row) and it cost us around 1000 Euro for 2 people (return tickets). I would advise you to not go to March, since it’s pretty cold, not in July either (it’s VERY hot). May-June are OK, same with September. The ticket prices will be bigger (it’s already the season), but you might get some good deals
