Is Abortion Right?

Abortion is a subject on which many people have different opinions on if it is right or wrong. It is a very controversial subject of which everyone has an opinion on. There is no right or wrong and that is why people feel so strong about  the subject. Firstly I would like to share simply what the rules are for abortion in the United Kingdom.

In the UK, abortion is allowed if;

  1. The mothers life is at risk.
  2. There is a risk of injury to the mothers physical or mental health.
  3. A chance of an existing child been heavily effected by another child.
  4. The fetus is below 24 weeks old.
  5. A high risk that the child could be severely handicapped.

Now, there are two different main groups that have views on abortion in the UK. They are the pro-life and pro-choice groups. The pro-life group believe that the fetus is still a human life and although it has not fully developed yet still has the same human rights as another human and therefore the mother or anyone else should not be able to decide if that baby dies or not. The Pro-choice group believe that it is the mothers choice on what she wants to do as she is the one that has to carry the baby and therefore if she does not want the baby for whatever reason, she should be able to have an abortion. I would be very interested to hear what you think about this and if you think the current stance on abortion in the UK is right in your opinion or not.

Personally I feel that both make some good points. My stance is that the mother should be able to have an abortion if they were raped, are underage, there is mental or physical health risks to either the mother or the baby or the child will be handicapped. I however do not think that they should be allowed an abortion just because they do not want the child. The reason on my thinking is that if they are raped and get pregnant, that child is going to be a constant reminder to the mother of what happened and that will most likely cause much more issues in the future. Also, if health problems are at risk then it would be a better choice for health sake to have an abortion. If they do not just want the child there is more options to go through like adoption and a lot of support can be offered throughout the whole of the ordeal. A life should not be taken for reasons of not wanting it because a fetus still is a life in my opinion and it will be ruining and cutting short what could of been a very good life.

All religions are against abortions after a certain amount of time however the time varies and have different circumstances. Muslims think that abortion is okay until 120 days of been pregnant and if the mothers or childs circumstances are bad. Catholics however believe that it is not right under any circumstances no matter what and Christians think that it is wrong but under some circumstances it should be allowed.

As a final question to anyone who decided to read this. Do you think abortion should be allowed? and if so, under what circumstances?

  1. Like most things, I can see both sides to this issue. Overall, I lean more on the side of those who say pro-choice. The first two “exceptions” where abortion is allowed in the UK are ones I agree with. If the mother is going to be seriously injured or even die as a result of child birth or pregnancy, then she shouldn’t have to go through it if she doesn’t want to.

The others are bit more iffy, but I don’t see any reason to say that they aren’t plausible reasons when the first two are. Therefore, I agree that they are reasonable reasons to have an abortion.

So about others? What about rape victims? There are many possible scenarios that could have causes the pregnancy and even more possible reasons that the mother might not want the child. Who are we to say that any one of those reasons is not good enough and who are we to force a woman to go through pregnancy and labor if she doesn’t want to? Let her and her loved ones have the say, not you or the government.

    • Yeah I agree with you here but I really do not agree with the ‘if she does not want it’ part. I agree for like rape or other reasons (as listed in my article) but just not wanting one seems a bit of a poor excuse for me.

      • So it’d be better for the woman to have the child and give it a horrible life or to put it through the shitty adoption system that’s already over crowded with kids?

        • I can see where you are coming from but who is to say what the kids life will turn out to be. If you end the life before having a chance we could be killing the next Bill Gates. There is a lot of flaws with the adoption system but still giving a child a chance of life is what I feel should be done.

          • The kid will be the next ‘bill gates’ if he’s getting to a good loving family, who’ll know how to raise him. Otherwise the foster system will ‘kill’ him and by the time he’s 18 he’s just good to spend a life in prison, since god knows what crimes he’s done already 😉

      • Roach, you can’t come and tell a mother to keep her kid, if she doesn’t want it. Believe me, my family has been through this and, if she didn’t want the kid, no force in this world could make her even want a contact after more than 30 years.

        • Some people are just like that though. They are not ready to bring someone up but ready to go through the stages to create a child. I just believe that ending a babies life without chance is wrong. Life is all about coping with what you have.

  2. As a WOMAN myself I believe in PRO CHOICE. Thank god I never had an abortion, and I was VERY careful all these years. I took pills and am still taking them since the condom is not really nice all the time and I don’t go to bed with any strangers. So, since I had only steady and very long time relationships, STDs weren’t an issue.

I was careful since I didn’t want to go through an abortion, as I knew for many years I am not prepared to have a child. I was an ‘accident’ myself and was raised by my father (only because back then in Romania abortions were illegal). I am a happy example of what can happen when a parent does the right thing (even if it wasn’t the mother), I was raised well by him and his parents and LOVED with all their heart.

I did spend some years in an orphanage (till 5), so that they can ‘fight’ to get the custody – it was a messy complicated situation, and I have some memories from there. It’s NOT a nice place.

So, my take on it would be that, if you really don’t want the kid and can’t be bothered to at least arrange for a decent adoption, abort and don’t screw the kid’s life. Abortion is not contraception though and women should make sure they don’t get pregnant unless they WANT this.

It’s not rocket science, really. I’ve been doing ‘adult’ things since I was 19, this means almost 15 years. I enjoy sex and know how to protect myself. There’s like a gazillion ways to protect yourself, so be informed. Even you guys, since, if it goes wrong, you’ll mess up your life too.

We’re considering having a baby now, since we’ve been together for 10 years almost and it’s clear this is the next logical step. We have a good financial situation, love each other and are ready to become parents.

You cannot tell a woman what to do with her body and, anytime abortion was illegal, you’d have them die or get real sick. If a woman doesn’t want a baby, she won’t have it/raise it. So, by making it illegal, we’re just messing up things. But EDUCATION is important and any teenager should know that sex, while very enjoyable, comes with some serious risks.

    • Thanks for such a great reply. You clearly have a strong opinion on this from your previous experience. I can see why you believe in what you believe in but it is great to see you turned out living a decent life in the end. This is what I tried to get across in my article, showing that sometimes just not wanting one, or having small doubts can stop a decent life been lived. Although as I have seen from my responses, some of you feel different, which is fine. This is why it is such a controversial subject and why I wanted to make the article. Thanks for the response.
